The graph describes the national breakdown of those who pass or fail the RD exam by percent. Each category includes both first time and repeat test takers. Over the years, pass rate trends have been on the decline.
The graph shows the national pass rates by percent of those who are first time test takers compared to repeat test takers. Repeat test takers are defined as those who take the exam more than once. This population of test takers are at a greater disadvantage than those who are first time test takers. As of 2019, repeat test takers only had a third of a chance of passing.
This graph observes the population growth of RefreshExamS™ over time. The number of students working with RefreshExamS™ has increased over 2x from 2018 to 2019. We predict in 2020 that our population will decrease due to the impact of the pandemic. However, our goals for our students will not change.
A comparison between the national and RefreshExamS™' pass rates for repeat test takers. RefreshExamS™ aims to continue to have its repeat test takers pass more often. In 2019, we observed that our overall pass rate for repeat test takers declined. This led us to investigate into what may have happened.
Through our research, we assessed multiple possibilities into why our pass rates were lower than the prior years. An increase in the student population was one important factor that led us to look at the impact of engagement. When filtering for students who do not complete our courses and failed the exam, we saw an increase in our pass rates by roughly 13%. RefreshExamS™ has now implicated a new intervention that not only benefits students and motivates them to fully complete our courses, but additionally increases their chances at passing the exam.
Each colored column indicates a different tutoring intervention that students may choose. These interventions are: Success Course +5, Success Course, 10-hour Ilene or Associate, and 1:1 Ilene. The combined category encompasses students who enrolled in multiple study packages. We hypothesize that combined packages may not have as high an impact on student engagement. However, each intervention has a higher pass rate than the national pass rate. RefreshExamS™ has also included a new program called the “Success Course + 5.5”.
This graph shows the combined pass rate of each program over the past 5+ years that RefreshExamS™ has been tutoring students. Here you can observe the overall picture of the impact of our tutoring and test preparation services with engagement.
Next Up: Our Pilot Study!
RefreshExamS™ ran a pilot study with the goal of tracking the impact of our tutoring intervention and aiding students in reaching their goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian. We are sharing with you today the results of the entrance survey we had our students voluntarily fill out. This survey included responses from 47 students who consented to participate in our independent study. To respect the privacy of our students, no identifying information will be included in the analyses. Data included demographics of our student population including education, gender, and experiences taking the RD exam. With support from our students through their participation, we were inspired to create our new study focusing on exam score improvement, preparation, and student engagement. Check out our results below!
Over half of students who work with us have just completed their Bachelor’s and over a third have their Master’s. We do expect this to change by 2024 when exam requirements change to include completion of a Master’s.
The majority of our students are female. According to CDR, 90.6% of RDs are female and only 3.8% of RDs are male (1). Our data is following similar patterns to the demographics of RDs already in the field.
76.6% of our students come from dietetic internships. With only 17% coming from coordinated programs.
The majority of our students come to us for help when they are one month or more away from their exam. During this time, we determine which tutoring program will be the best fit for their individual needs. We also take the time to evaluate exam readiness of our students. If a student has not scheduled their exam yet, then we work with them to set an appropriate date. .
This graph observes the amount of time that has passed since students completed their accredited programs. The majority of students completed their programs 7-11 months ago. This pattern would reflect the repeat test taker population. Most students would have had time to take the exam at least one time before working with RefreshExamS™. Another quarter of our students completed their programs over a year ago. This indicates that students were attempting the exam multiple times before seeking out RefreshRD. We aimed to reach out to students before students go beyond a year of attempts.
Almost 8 out of 10 RefreshExamS™ students are repeat test testers. RefreshExamS™ works closely with their students and provides them with the appropriate tutoring package that will help them find success. Most students try to take the exam on their own before looking for help. We strongly encourage even first time test takers to reach out to us before their exam because passing is not a guarantee after completing your program.
The majority of students enrolled in RefreshExamS™ are repeat test takers and have attempted the exam at least once. Repeat test takers are a population that utilizes our tutoring services the most because the chances of a student passing the exam after the first time goes from 69% to 33%, cut by more than half (2). However, almost a fifth of students are first time test takers that are enrolling in our program. We aim to include more first-time students in future analyses to see if our intervention will have higher pass rates than the national average.
Two out of three students who come to us need help with Domain 1. RefreshExamS™ has a class for each domain and provides 1:1 tutoring. This class has two tutors that work together to teach this section. Students will learn the Principles of Dietetics, along with a thorough course in research. When signing up for the Success Course, students will receive a class in each domain, as well as additional classes covering strategy, diabetes, and much more! Homework, handouts, and other resources are also provided to the student.
Nutrition care for individuals and groups (Domain 2) is one of the most challenging domains for our students surveyed with 87% of students reporting that they have challenges with domain 2. At RefreshExamS™ we have expert tutors in this field that work with students in a live, online group setting or 1:1 for test preparation. Additionally, we provide homework, handouts, flashcards and classes to promote confidence in this domain.
Management of food and nutrition programs is another challenging domain for students to grasp, tied with Domain 2 with 87% of respondents rating the domain as challenging. RefreshExamS™ has expert tutors that teach the material in this domain. Resources in this domain include homework, a live online class, and individual sessions dedicated to helping students find confidence when it comes to Domain 3 topics.
Almost 75% of our students have challenges with Domain 4: Foodservice systems. As with our other domains, we provide students with the necessary tools to find success in this domain. We have expert tutors that have been in the foodservice industry for a number of years, and teach the Success Course class on this topic and provide 1:1 tutoring for students.
The response “yes” is in red and the response “no” is in the darker blue. The majority of our students had not received any tutoring intervention prior to working with RefreshExamS™. Passing the RD exam is not a given after completing your program. From the results shown in this graph, we determined that the need for exam preparation is KEY in helping our students pass the exam. The other options students chose were kept anonymous to respect the privacy of other companies.
We're in the process of conducting an exciting research project about the effects of tutoring on RD exam pass rates!
We invite all RefreshExamS™ students to participate in our research study and
be part of the passing percentage™. Contact us at research@refreshRD.com if you're interested in participating in the study.
Rationale: Dietetic students who have completed their internships or coordinated programs are eligible to sit for the RD Exam, but they may need extra assistance in order to pass. There are many popular sources that students utilize as their primary and supplementary study materials, and each of these materials is an investment. These resources can provide students with outlines and practice questions, and some have tutoring services available. However, these programs don't often publish the pass/fail rates of their students. Statistics show that RD exam pass rates have been declining over the past few years - in 2018 between January 1st and June 30th, the pass rate was 56%, down from 68% in 2017 and 72% in 2016. With the demand for dietitians increasing and a projected growth of 15% from 2016 to 2026, the pass rate of students will become even more important.
RefreshRD is a tutoring and test preparation company that provides students with optimum study packages to fit their individual needs to improve their time management, enhance study skills, build knowledge and confidence, and pass the Registered Dietitian Exam whether they are taking it for the first time or after multiple attempts. The goal of this research is to provide statistics of the program and to determine the overall impact tutoring has on the pass rates of students, while acknowledging merging outside resources with their own.
The graph presents the pass rate percentage of repeat test takers published by the Commission on Dietetic Registration from 2016 to 2018 compared with RefreshExamS™' pass rate percentage of repeat test taker students on the registered dietitian examination. The pass rates of repeated test takers are the focus due to the majority of RefreshRD’s student population being repeat test takers (95.8%), based on the total number of students who took the exam between 2016 and 2018. This includes students who failed the exam the prior year and then passed it the following year. Each student is provided with a unique tutoring package aimed to fit their individual needs. RefreshExamS™' average repeat test taker pass rate between 2016 and 2018 was ~1.7x higher with the intervention of tutoring applied (65.9%) than CDR’s average repeat test taker pass rate (38.4%).
STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS
This analysis provides a snapshot of the pass rates of the number of students who were or currently using RefreshExamS™ and took the RD exam at least once when using RefreshExamS™ as a resource between 2016-18. From this analysis, the impact of tutoring on RefreshRD’s repeat test takers average pass rate is ~1.7x higher than CDR’s average repeat test takers' pass rates (2016-18), meeting the goal of improving the passing rate of repeat test takers. One limitation is that the majority of RefreshExamS™ students are repeat test takers at 95.8%, however one of the aims of RefreshRD is to help those who have not passed the RD exam after multiple attempts. Another limitation is that exam outcomes are self-reported data. Additionally, not all students' repeated test outcomes were available. Another limitation is that RefreshExamS™ began in 2016 and not many students were enrolled, therefore, only a small population of repeat test takers were available to analyze (n=46) in comparison to CDR’s repeat test takers averaged between 2016-18 (n=2,150). However, RefreshExamS™ has almost doubled the amount of students each year who have taken the exam using their tutoring methods since 2017, therefore increasing the reliability of the effectiveness of tutoring overtime.
The information provided on our website is true and complete. RefreshExamS™ has made every attempt to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information and data analyses provided on its website. All CDR data was obtained at https://admin.cdrnet.org/vault/2459/web/files/RDGroupPerformance2018.pdf. This data is intended only for the use of showing the impact RefreshExamS™ tutoring has on the pass rates of participants taking the Registered Dietitian Examination, specifically for those who are repeat test takers.
